Hue University, formerly known as the University of Hue, was established in 1957. Over nearly 65 years of construction and development, Hue University is a higher education institution that plays a leading role in high-quality human resources training in Thua Thien Hue province, Central, Central Highlands, and the whole country. Hue University ranks the top five higher education institutions in Vietnam and the top 350-500 universities in Asia.

1957

The University of Hue was established on March 1, 1957. The birth of the University of Hue marked a new step forward in the higher education system of Vietnam. This was the first higher education institution in Central Vietnam and one of the higher education institutions had a long tradition in Vietnam. In 1957, the University of Hue had 4 departments including Science, Pedagogy, Literature, and Law. Two years later in 1959, the Department of Medicine was formed.

1975

After the unification of the country, the University of Hue made a change in the organization and management models. Independent universities including the General University, the Pedagogical University, and the Medical University were established in Hue on the basis of the existing faculties of The University of Hue.

1994

On April 4, 1994, according to the Government Decree No. 30/ND-CP, Hue University was re-established by reorganizing all Hue-based universities. Hue University consisted of University of Science, University of Education, University of Agriculture and Forestry, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, University of Arts, and other training and scientific research centers such as: Distance Training Center (1995), Center for Resources, Environment and Biotechnology (1995).

2002

University of Economics, Hue University was established pursuant to the Decision No. 126/QD-TTg dated September 27, 2002 by the Prime Minister on the basis of Faculty of Economics – Hue University (established in 1995). 

2004

University of Foreign Languages, Hue University ​​was established pursuant to the Decision No. 126/2004/QD-TTG dated July 13, 2004 by the Prime Minister on the basis of merging departments of foreign languages ​​from other member universities of Hue University. During this period, IT Center, Learning Resource Center, and Student Service Center were also established. 

2005

School of Physical Education - Hue University was established on the basis of transforming the functions and tasks of the Center for Physical Education of Hue University. During this time, Hue University Publishing House was established.

2006

On May 3, 2006, the Minister of Education and Training signed the Decision No. 2155/QD-BGD&DT to establish Hue University Quang Tri Campus on the basis of the Representative Office of Hue University in Quang Tri which was established in 2005 by Hue University President.

2007

On March 26, 2007, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung signed Decision No. 334 / QD-TTG to rename the University of Medicine, Hue University to the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Hue University.
According to Decision No. 1080 / QD-DHH-TCNS by Hue University President, on November 14, 2007, the Center for Resources, Environment and Biotechnology was officially transformed into the Institute of Resources, Environment and Biotechnology. 

2008

School of Tourism and Hospitality - Hue University was established according to the Decision No. 020 / QD-DHH-TCNS by Hue University President dated January 14, 2008, based on the request to reorganize the training majors related to tourism at Hue University.

2009

School of Law - Hue University was established according to Decision No. 868 / QD-DHH-TCNS dated August 19, 2009 by Hue University President.

2014

Institute of Biotechnology - Hue University was established pursuant to Decision No. 808 / QD-DHH dated April 29, 2014 by Hue University President.

2015

University of Law was established pursuant to Decision No. 274 / QD-TTg dated March 3, 2015, by the Prime Minister.

2018

On May 14, 2018, the Prime Minister signed Decision No. 523/QD-TTG on approving the Project to develop the Institute of Biotechnology, Hue University. Therefore, on July 16, 2018, Hue University President signed Decision No. 939/QD-DHH to reorganize the Institute of Biotechnology into a member unit of Hue University which operates multi-disciplinary research and technology transfer fields.

2019

- International School - Hue University was established pursuant to Decision No. 141 / QD-DHH dated February 14, 2019.

- School of Engineering and Technology - Hue University was established pursuant to Decision No. 1424/QD-DHH dated October 24, 2019, by Hue University President.

2020

- University of Tourism and Hospitality - Hue University was established pursuant to the Decision No. 75/QD-HDĐH dated November 16, 2020 by Hue University Council on the basis of School of Tourism and Hospitability - Hue University.

- Institute of Open Training and Information Technology - Hue University was established pursuant to Decision No. 46/QD-DHH dated January 13, 2020, on the basis of the consolidation of the Continuing Education Center, Learning Resource Center, and Information Technology Center - Hue University.

After nearly 65 years of construction and development, Hue University has currently 09 member units: University of Science, University of Education, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, University of Agriculture and Forestry, University of Arts, University of Economics, University of Foreign Languages, University of Law, Institute of Biotechnology; University of Tourism and Hospitality; 03 affiliated schools: School of Physical Education, International School, and School of Engineering and Technology; Quang Tri Campus; Centers, Research and Training Institutes and Publishing House.
