According to this July 2017 edition, Hanoi University of Science and Technology ranks first in Vietnam, up from 2nd place in January 2017. Behind Hanoi University of Science and Technology is Vietnam National University Hanoi, Hanoi University of Education, Can Tho University, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, etc. Hue University ranked 12th in Vietnam. Thus, Hue University remained the 12th place in Vietnam compared to the January 2017 edition, up from the 16th place in Vietnam compared to the ranking edition in July 2016.

Since 2004, the Ranking Web (or Webometrics Ranking) is published twice a year. Data is collected during the first weeks of January and July for being public at the end of both months, covering more than 27,000 Higher Education Institutions worldwide. The objective of the ranking is to motivate both institutions and scholars to have a web presence that reflect accurately their activities. If the web performance of an institution is below the expected position according to their academic excellence, university authorities should reconsider their web, open access and transparency policy, promoting substantial increases of the volume and quality of their electronic publications.

Webmetrics ranking in the July 2017 edition uses the following four indicators (the smaller the score, the higher the ranking):

- Presence: Size (number of pages) of the main webdomain of the institution. It includes all the subdomains sharing the webdomain and all the file types including rich files like pdf documents. Source: Google (weight: 5%)

- Visibility: Number of external networks (subnets) originating backlinks to the institutions webpages. After normalization, the maximum value between the two sources is selected. Source: Ahrefs and Majestic (weight:50%)

- Transparency (or Openess): Number of citations from Top authors according to the source (But see Transparent Ranking for additional info). Source: Google Scholar Citations (weight:10%)

- Excellent (or Scholar):  Number of papers amongst the top 10% most cited in 26 disciplines. Data for the five year period (2011-2015). Source: Scimago (weight:35%)
