President of Hue University warmly welcomed Prof. Sir John Ball and Prof. Ngo Bao Chau to Hue University (22-08-2016 15:36)

On 15 August 2016, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Toan, President of Hue University had a working meeting with Prof. Sir John Ball and Prof. Ngo Bao Chau. Prof. Sir John Ball is a Sedleian Professor of Natural Philosophy - University of Oxford, a member of the first Abel Prize in 2002 and for the Fields Medal in 1998. Prof. Ngo Bao Chau, scientific director at VIASM, Professor at Mathematics Faculty - University of Chicago, USA. He was awarded the Fields Prize in 2010.

 

The meeting is within the framework of a working visit of the two professors at Hue University to promote research and teaching Mathematics and cooperation between Hue University and Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (VIASM). Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Toan introduced to the two professors the faculties of Mathematics of College of Education and of College of Sciences which have tradition of passion for mathematics. However, at present, enrollment into basic sciences including mathematics is facing difficulties. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Toan asked the two professors for advices to develop mathematics at Hue University in the time to come, to inspire students of Hue University to love Mathematics.

 

Prof. John Ball and Prof. Ngo Bao Chau affirmed the growing role and influence of mathematics on all areas of life. Therefore, making mathematics come to life so as to be easily absorbed is what mathematicians are trying to math. According to Prof. Ngo Bao Chau, there are many natives of Hue City, who had a lot of contribution to the development of Vietnam Mathematics. Therefore, there should be special policies for Hue to incubate, nurture and train mathematic talents. This is the third time GS. Ngo Bao Chau came to Hue University.

 

On the same day, the two professors gave lectures on “The story of Perelman and the Poincaré conjecture” and “On the history of the last Fermat theorem" at Hue University.
