The University of Medicine and Pharmacy - Hue University, formerly known as the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hue  was established on 28/8/1957. On October 27, 1976, the Prime Minister signed Decision No. 426-TTg to establish Hue University of Medicine under the Ministry of Health. Since 1994, according to Decree 30/CP dated 4/4/1994 of the Prime Minister, Hue University of Medicine became a member university of Hue University. Since 2007, the University was renamed University of Medicine and Pharmacy - Hue University under Decision 334/QD-TTg dated March 26, 2007 of the Prime Minister.

In his speech in celebration of the 60 Anniversary of the university, Prof. Cao Ngoc Thanh recalled the history of the university including the difficult early days, ups and downs, changes and remarkable achievements of today. From 1957-1997, the university has only one medical program with the annual enrollment of 100-300 students, whereas the university has 18 medical undergraduate programs with the annual enrollment of nearly 2,000 students, and 83 graduate programs with the annual enrollment of 1,500 graduate students. The total number of students at undergraduate level of training to 10,082 undergraduates and 26 training locations all over the country. Besides, the university has trained 1,232 students of ethnic minorities origin of which 746 graduated, 144 Laotian students and some students from other countries such as Finland, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, etc.

Over the past 10 years, the University has conducted more than 1,500 scientific researches at all levels, with higher and higher number of ministerial level researches. There were 127 innovative initiatives for the management, teaching, treatment and treatment of patients; awarded for 116 scientific researches at all levels. Many valuable subjects were applied and good results achieved. From the scientific research movement, for many consecutive years, the lecturers of the University were honorably named in the lists of "Vietnamese Young Doctors", "Vietnamese Young Talents"; 37 academic staffs were awarded with the Innovation Labor Award by the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor; two lecturers were awarded international awards for research, and two lecturers were conferred the title of associate professor abroad.

From 2000 to 2009, the university have implemented 679 scientific research projects at all levels, including 2 state-levels, 135 ministerial levels, 4 major ministerial levels, 5 provincial levels and 537 base levels and won 105 research awards. Many researches are identified to be valuable both in science and practice and applied in diagnosis and treatment. There have been 746 articles published in national and international scientific journals. The university currently has 15 international research projects implemented effectively. Over the past 10 years, the University has welcomed over 600 international delegations from 35 countries which came to work, to sign cooperation agreements and visit; Organized nearly 120 international scientific conferences; received over 200 students from the United States, Germany, Canada, France, Italy, Australia, Korea, Thailand, etc. who came to intern at the university's faculties, departments and hospital. There are 18 international research projects that have been implemented effectively. Especially, during 3 recent Hue Festivals, many visitors and Thua Thien Hue people were very impressed with the Science Festivals organized by Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy. At the Festival of Science, the public could visit not only the products of scientific nature but also get to know real life issues such as hygiene, food safety, Harm of alcohol, tobacco. People could also ask many leading national and international scientists on health and life-sustaining issues. The Science Festival also focuses on promoting the achievements and information of the university's public health care.

Regarding the university development orientation, Prof. Cao Ngoc Thanh hoped that the philosophy of education "Knowledge and Compassion" that the university has applied will be the mainstream of the 21st century. "The University has always considered the development of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy - Hue University with the spirit of Phu Xuan - Thuan Hoa - Hue - the royal land of noble traditions of always working forward to the future, conserving the culture as well as creating good and humanity values in any circumstances".

On behalf of the leaders of Vietnam Ministry of Education and Training, Vice Minister Bui Van Ga praised and congratulated Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy for its achievements. Vice Minister Bui Van Ga hoped that with the experience of 60 years of construction and development, Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy would quickly update its objectives and approach the training programs of developed countries so that the university's new generations of students would be highly competitive in the integration period. The Ministry would always create favorable conditions for the University of Medicine and Pharmacy - Hue University to continue to improve the quality of training, to become a key university in the system of medical universities in the country and in the world.
