Hue University delegation visits and works with universities in Guangxi and Yunnan provinces, China (14-04-2009 15:19)
Based on the policy framework of strengthening and developing cooperative relationships with regional universities, on the invitation of the universities in Guangxi and Yunnan  provinces, China, Hue University delegation, including Directorial Board members, Rectors, Vice Rectors of affiliated colleges, heads of functional departments, directors of subordinate centers, headed by Assoc Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Toan, University Party Committee Secretary, Hue University President took a business trip to China from March 24 to March 29, 2009.

During this trip, Hue University delegation worked with Guangxi University, Guangxi Medical University, Guangxi Traditional Chinese Medical University, Guangxi Teacher Education University, Guangxi Institute for Nationalities and Yunnan University.

On March 24, 2009, the delegation visited and worked with Guangxi University, a public university in Nanning city, Guangxi province. Founded in 1928, this long-standing university specializes in natural and social sciences research and training and is defined as one of the 100 important universities in the 21st century of China. Guangxi University has had a good cooperative relationship with more than 100 universities and research institutes in 28 countries and within the region. From 1962 on, the university has trained a host of international students at undergraduate and master's levels for nearly 40 countries.

Hue University delegation was received by Mr. Duong Quoc Luong, Secretary of Guangxi University Party Committee together with the leaders of the University’s departments and centers. Mr. Duong Quoc Luong expressed his joy at welcoming Hue University leaders. He saw Hue University as a key university of Vietnam, which is located in an ancient city with famous landscape. Moreover, he also expressed his hope that this visit would build a foundation for greater mutual cooperation.

In the meeting, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Toan affirmed the special ties between Hue University in particular and Vietnamese people and Chinese people and universities through time. Also, he highlighted the strategic importance of the cooperative relationship between Hue University and Guangxi University colleges. As Guangxi University is a multi-disciplinary and multi-field one sharing many similarities with Hue University, it is very convenient to foster a long lasting mutual relationship between them.

The two sides entered into a cooperation agreement on staff training and exchange, scientific research, material interchange and arrangement of business trips for the leaders of the two Universities to share knowledge.

On March 25, 2009, Hue University working delegation continued to work and sign cooperation agreements with Guangxin Medical University, Traditional Chinese Medical University, and Guangxin Teacher Education University.

Guangxi Medical University is one of the most long-established medical training institutions in China. Founded in 1934, the university was one of the earliest universities in China admitting international students to its clinical medicine program mainly delivered in English. The University has promptly developed international education programs and become the destination of many medical undergraduate and graduate students from many countries all over the world, especially from Vietnam. Guangxi Medical University has 10 affiliated colleges and departments and 8 subordinate hospitals with up to 3,500 staff members. The university now has 3,800 medical students, 1200 medical technology students and more than 1,000 graduates. Hue University delegation signed an agreement on cooperative contents here. After that, the delegation paid a visit to Guangxi Institute for Nationalities with the aim of building up the premise for mutual cooperation in the future.   

At Guangxi Traditional Chinese Medical University, Hue University signed several cooperation agreements to provide Hue University College of Medicine and Pharmacy a foundation to further explore the possibility of specialized cooperative programs. Guangxi Traditional Chinese Medical University was established in 1956 with the functions of education, training, scientific research, patient treatment and copyrighted pharmaceuticals production. The university has 15,000 students and 2,600 staff members of researching, teaching and treating. The university manages five hospitals, one pharmaceutical factory, one school of oriental medicine, nine research institutes and one healthcare service linking with over 20 other hospitals. In 2003, it was ranked by the Chinese Ministry of Education as Excellence in training medical doctors. Guangxi Traditional Chinese Medical University is one of the earliest universities given permission to admit international students from 20 countries including Australia, America, Germany, England and other countries in the region.

Guangxi Traditional Chinese Medical University has not only operated in Oriental Medicine but also concentrated on expanding Western Medicine. Consequently, the university has developed many advanced components which can contribute to the cooperation with Hue University College of Medicine and Pharmacy. At present, Guangxi Traditional Chinese Medical University is the vanguard in cardiovascular diseases treatment for the whole Guangxi province and also gains prestige in genetics. In addition, the university also obtains some advance in treating cancer thanks to American-made modern devices. For the time being, the university is considered as a leading unit in radiotherapy. In the meeting, the university expressed its joy at the prospect of establishing Traditional Medicine Center at Hue University College of Medicine and Pharmacy, and signed detailed cooperation components.   

In the meeting with Guangxi Teacher Education University, the two universities discussed the potentials for their long-term and effective collaboration. Guangxi Teacher's Education University has developed a long-standing cooperative relationship with Hue University College of Education. Founded in 1953, the university has so far had 55-year history of establishment and development. The university has more than 1,200 staffs including 315 high-ranking experts and 315 doctors and masters. Furthermore, the Teacher's Education University has 12,000 students, 14 subordinate departments and institutes training 31 master’s level and 41 undergraduate level majors. The university also gave the delegation a formal exchange with the motto “revising the old to learn the new" and discussed new and deep cooperation orientation in all aspects which the two sides concerned.

On March 28, 2009, Hue University delegation went on with a visit to Kunming, the metropolis of Yunnan province, signing a cooperation agreement with the historical Yunnan University. The campus of Yunnan University used to be the location of the school recruiting mandarins for the imperial court since 1499. The university has been one of the first multi-disciplinary universities in Southwest China, which began its admission in 1923. During its 80-year establishment and development, the university has gained outstanding achievements. From 1988 on the university has been regarded one of 88 key universities of China. With its high-qualified lecturers, researchers and modern infrastructure, the university is now providing a study environment for 20,000 graduate and undergraduate official students at 18 subordinate colleges and departments. In 2007, the university admitted 893 international students and now has 1,500 international students learning and researching on campus.

In the meeting, Yunnan University leadership confirmed that they paid much attention to the development of the cooperative relationship with the universities in Southeast Asia, including Vietnam. However, due to both objective and subjective causes, Yunnan University and Hue University so far have not yet developed an all-round partner relationship in proportion to the potentials of the two universities. As a result, Yunnan University sincerely welcomed the visit of Hue University delegation and hoped that it would be a valuable opportunity for the two universities to promote more profound and comprehensive cooperation.

Hue University leadership also expressed their desire to boost the cooperative relationship with Yunnan University up to a higher level, especially in the favorable conditions of transportation and communication, and with the great help of the Consulate General of Vietnam in Yunnan. Yunnan University was commited to granting three Chinese Government scholarships and some university’s Master and PhD scholarships to Hue University students and lecturers on an annual basis since 2009. The two sides agreed that they would promote the construction of a Sinology Research Center at Hue University in the earliest time.

March 29, 2009, Hue University delegation successfully finished its official business trip to the several universities in Southern China.
