International workshop on “Wateralong community: Hue” (14-09-2010 14:49)

On August 16, Hue University College of Sciences and Center for Sustainable Urban Regeneration, the University of Tokyo co-hosted a workshop entitled "Wateralong Community: Hue". The workshop drew the attention of many Vietnamese and Japanese researchers.

12 reports of Vietnamese and Japanese researchers were presented at the workshop, focusing on such problems as flooding and inundation in Hue; water quality and health risk assessment; history and architecture of Hue landscape relating to water; and climate change and the urbanization of Hue. Hue has been facing with these problems, especially flooding and inundation which happen yearly and cause bad effects on the environment, physical facilities and community health.

The researchers from the University of Tokyo concerned about the water environment of Hue and formed initial connections with experts in Hue, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Previously, a workshop on the same topic was hosted in Tokyo for specialists of both sides on January 10, 2010.

At this workshop, researchers of both sides continued to exchange new information and research results. The workshop was also a chance for them to make contact with public administrators and new partners in the locality. The ultimate goal of the workshop was to propose solutions for the management of water environment and water-related health risk, contributing to the sustainable development of Hue city under the impact of climate change.

The workshop took place in three days, from August 16 to 18, 2010. As part of the workshop, the workshop researchers would have a field trip, on August 17, to reservoirs and hydroelectric dams upstream of the Perfume River, and canals and lakes inside Hue Citadel. On August 18, workshop would be an open forum for information exchange with the joining of representatives from Thua Thien Hue and Hue City authorities, related departments, organizations, and Hue University, and  researchers and interested people in Hue.
