On April 26- 28, 2009, "Promoting communities' adaptation and sustainable livelihoods to deal with calamities in the Central Vietnam"  cooperative project between Japanese Kyoto University, JICA and Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry held a workshop to assess those activities in the period Sep, 2006-Aug, 2009 with the participation of representatives from JICA, Kyoto Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies, project members from Central Provinces, and Hue University College of Agriculture and Forestry.

The project aims to enhance the communities' adaptation, protect the environment and develop household economy, create social welfare, and ensure safety for people.

Various activities have been conducted in Hong Ha, Huong Van and Huong Phong- the three communes in mountainous and coastal areas acting as living places of many Thua Thien Hue ethnic minorities. Together with the diminution in indigenous knowledge and cultural features, natural resources are progressively depleted due to human exploitation accompanied by natural calamities.

Project staff include specialized officials from Hue University College of Agriculture and Forestry and Japanese researchers, holding such group activities as: Huong Van livestock raising; goat raising for sustainable livelihoods in Hong Ha, A Luoi; aquaculture model development to deal with natural calamities and protect the environment; indoor mushroom production to enhance livelihood and support small business for poor households; cooperative approaches and sustainable orientation towards Biogas system, vanilla pilot plantation; education activities about environment and disasters; building community houses to preserve and promote traditional values; restoring Dzeng weaving career for Hong Ha women, preserving and promoting cultural values of traditional musical instruments and folk songs, etc.

After 3 years being the beneficiaries of the project, local inhabitants have been more confident in interacting, learning, and raising their consciousness of environmental protection, and enriching themselves, their family and society.

Within the workshop framework, the delegation also visited those models carried out in Huong Van, Huong Phong and Hong Ha communes.
